Childs First Visit

Preparing for your Child's first visit
You can play an important role in preparing your child for his or her first visit to the dentist. Any anxiety on your part will probably be sensed by your child. Tell your child that we will brush, "count" and "take pictures" of his/her teeth. Do not use any fear provoking words such as "hurt, drill, pull, shot and needle." Avoid statements like "the doctor will not hurt you." Try to maintain a positive attitude; if you tell your child it will be fun, it will be.

What to expect at the first visit
The doctor will do a full examination of the child's teeth and supporting structures. X-rays may be taken depending on the age and needs of the individual child, typically for children ages 4 or older. The doctor will explain your child's need and answer any questions you have. Subsequent visits, including routine cleanings, can be scheduled before you leave the office. During your child's first visit, we invite you to stay with your child. We feel that good habits begin with parents, and by having you there we can educate you as well as your child. If your child requires restorative work or follow up care, we recommend that you remain in the reception area while we are working with your child. We fInd we can establish a direct and close rapport more effectively with your child if you are not present. Our purpose is to gain your child's confidence and trust, and also their undivided attention. Please remember that Dr. Dean , Dr. J. Clark and Dr. H. Clark have been specially trained in behavior management techniques that will help your child through his/her appointment.
